Invisalign® Q & A

What is the Invisalign® System?

The Invisalign® system is an orthodontic treatment used by Dr. Redd to address a patient’s issues with alignment and overcrowding, without using traditional braces. Each set of aligners is designed to move teeth gradually into place over time. The Invisalign® system aligners are made from clear, BPA-free plastic which is approved for medicinal applications. This is very different from the traditional metal used. The aligners are practically invisible when being worn as well. The Invisalign® system uses impressions to create aligners uniquely made for each person. This is done by taking x-rays and 3D images of the person’s teeth and gums. These unique specifications are then given to a dental laboratory where the aligners will be made.

How do the aligners work?

In most circumstances, the dentist will begin by requesting a set of aligners for the individual. Treatment times will vary from person to person, but treatment programs usually last around 12 months. The number of aligners used will also vary based on the gravity of the individual’s alignment problems. The aligners will be worn during the entire length of treatment. They should only be removed to brush and floss teeth, change to a new set, or when eating certain foods. For most patients, the aligner set is changed out at two-week intervals. The aligners will need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day to be successful. Invisalign® aligners are very comfortable and will not aggravate the cheek and gum tissue which can occur with conventional braces.

What types of advantages does the Invisalign® system offer?

Metal braces, the most frequently used orthodontic device, cannot be taken out when undergoing treatment. The Invisalign® aligners can be taken out whenever the individual has a need to, such as when eating or cleaning teeth. Invisalign® aligners are also a good option for a person who does not want to feel self-conscious because there are visible devices on their teeth. Hygiene routines can also be easier to maintain since the aligners can be taken out, allowing the person to brush teeth without wires and brackets being in the way.
