Laser Cavity Detection Q & A

by John L. Redd II, DMD

What is laser cavity detection?

Attractive teeth are important to many people, and the health of the teeth is a crucial part of life. To sustain healthy teeth, having issues treated in their earliest stage is essential. DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection assists dentists with achieving that early detection. Laser cavity detection is an innovative tool which allows the dentist to view even very small issues much sooner than with traditional methods. This helps people to protect and preserve their teeth. With this tool, any cavities found can be addressed before they get bigger and cause more damage.

What is the DIAGNOdent measuring?

A DIAGNOdent detection device measures fluorescence within the tooth structure using a laser. When a laser light is pointed toward the tooth, a handpiece allows the device to measure how much laser light energy is bouncing back off of the tooth’s substance. The DIAGNOdent laser operates at a particular wavelength which can provide clear images of healthy and decayed tooth tissue. Clean, healthy tooth structures will show little to no light bouncing back from the tooth. The results will show a very low reading. However, tooth tissue which has a cavity will reflect larger amounts of light. This will, in turn, causing the scale readings to be very high.

Do I have to use protective eyewear?

Protective eyewear will not be needed. The device is harmless when used by a professional.
